School of Choice

School of Choice

We understand that for various needs some families may prefer to send their child to a location outside their designated school attendance boundary.

  • Families residing within Foothills School Division boundaries must submit Form 1a.
  • Families residing within other jurisdictions (ie: Calgary) must submit Form 1b.

The process to request a School of Choice is:

  1. Part A: Discuss the school choice preference with the principal of the student's designated school, and provide the reasoning within Part A of the School of Choice Application.
  2. Part B: The principal of the designated school completes Part B to indicate a discussion has occurred, and returns the signed form to the applying family.
  3. Part C: The Form 305-1A or 305-1B is submitted to the principal of the requested school of choice for consideration.

Further information, and links to the applicable forms, can be found in Administrative Procedure 305 - School Attendance Areas

Please be aware:

  • Students that are accepted to attend a School of Choice do not reapply annually when attending the same school.  Students may continue to attend the school until they transition out of that location.
  • When advancing through the Division's schools, such as from middle school to high school, and the high school is not the student's designated school, an application must again be submitted as outlined in Administrative Procedure 305.
  • Students attending a School of Choice may not be eligible for transportation. Transportation fees will apply (see more about Transportation).
